Luminous Water Creatures

Image
“ Just as one candle lights another and can light thousands of other candles, so one heart illuminates another heart and can illuminate thousands of other hearts .” - Leo Tolstoy. Keeping these motivational lines in mind, the students of grade I D along with their enterprising teacher Ms. Asmita, decided to enlighten the knowledge of all the other fellow students  by inculcating the spirit of inquiry in them in order to enhance their skills of critical thinking and problem solving.   For this, the students were encouraged to conduct rigorous research with regards to various underwater animals and analyze their characteristics against the features of various luminous water animals. Cross curricular activities integrating Math, Art and English were implemented to understand mathematical operations, furbish their art skills and boost their language competence. The students multiplied the suction tubes of certain animals with the number of their legs, various water animals were cre...

Great Minds At Work

Image
In the words of John Mc Donald, “ There must be a positive and negative in everything in the universe in order to complete a circuit or circle, without which there would be no activity, no motion” Electric things are so much part of our lives!  Gaining a current understanding of how electricity works and what it does is vital life learning.  Our emerging and investigative engineers of grade 6 were immensely engaged in learning the same, through a few interactive projects based on circuits. .  Our budding engineers  learnt the basics of building a series and parallel circuits.  By  the end of the activity they gained immense practical knowledge on LEDs, batteries, resistors, switches, board wiring, and spin circuits. The main activity  was to learn about  the difference between the two (series has one path for the electricity to flow, whereas parallel has two or more paths).Students also had to be able to use their analytical skills to determ...

Our Glowing World

Image
“You have to find what sparks a light in you, so that you, in your own way, can illuminate the world.” - Oprah Winfrey. Keeping this inspirational quote  in mind, the students of Grade 2 used their tinkering skills to light up and create a glowing world around them. Learning is not restricted to any single channel, the students incorporated a variety of cross curricular learning through this activity. Initially, they  were encouraged to  research various animals and plants that have the characteristics to glow naturally. Science surely makes this possible, so with the help of paper circuits the students created their glowing world. They also linked their creation with the various tense verbs they learnt during their English classes. Students were also fascinated learning the origami technique of making fireflies.  After days of  rigorous hard work and determination, these students were finally able to make their world glow. Let’s take a closer look at the revie...

A Peek At Beaks- Little Fingers Create Magic Moments

Image
Everybody likes a good comeback story and this time we are back with a bang!   As truly said by Barack Obama, “ We remember, we rebuild and we come back stronger "   We are glad to let you know how strong we have grown. Opening the gambit with the vision to excel has been the trend for us Mayoorites. Hence this time, we came up with a different initiative to create magic with paper circuits. Let me introduce you to yet another unique interesting enterprise taken by our students along with their zealous teachers.                 ‘A Peek At Beaks’ - Fun With Popsicle Flashlights - Grade 3                                                                Paper circuits ...

Sharing Our Success Stories

Image
Determination today is equal to success tomorrow. Few of our students have proved this to us, by dedicatedly working on their dreams to finally reach their goals. After hours of trial and sheer grit , Rajesh kumar Selvanayagam of grade seven has finally succeeded in creating a working model of a candy vending machine. Let's watch his success story. Saheed Siraj of grade six has prototyped an anti theft wallet, which when touched by anyone, other than the owner , will emit out light and beep loudly to indicate theft.  Dipesh Prakash of grade five has created a new scratch programmed game, that works with the help of Makey Makey. According to him, games are loved by people of all age groups, hence he decided to make a fun game for all to enjoy. The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old but on building the new. Our students are further working towards enhancing their prototype models, to make it more advanced and more user...

Trial and Success

Image
Over time, we have all been taught to make improvements in our lives, following a simple phrase, " Trial and Error ". However, I suggest that we should all start using and adapting to a subtly different phrase - " Trial and Success". Welcome back to cast an eye over the new developments our students are making at the tinker studio. Amvi Dwivedi of grade eight is mindful of the busy schedule that the working mothers face, day in and out. Therefore, she is trying to make life easier, for those working mothers, having very young babies. She is prototyping a Roller Buggy- Baby Stroller and Scooter Hybrid, that will help moms to manage time for their babies and also have time for themselves. The Roller Buggy is a multi-functional baby carriage transformable into a scooter. Through a simple pull motion of the lower body, it extends the normal baby carriage into a scooter, making a more sportive and faster mode of transportation on various terra...

From Concept To Creation

Image
As the proverb goes, ‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step.’ So it is with our enthusiastic students, who  took their first step to commence the initial stage of prototyping at the tinker studio. It was a captivating sight to see them engaged in thinking and putting efforts, to turn their thoughts to reality. Jessica Jitu and Earl D'souza, currently  studying in grade nine are collaboratively working to create a pair of shoes, that can convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. After a lot of brainstorming and  research, they are now working on transforming their imagery of a concept, into physical existence. Jishnu Prasanth Pillai is trying to make a Morse Code Machine. In this video, we can see him sharing his views about his creation. Rajeshkumar Selvanayagam of grade seven is prototyping a candy vending machine for people of all ages, to get access to candies, wherever and whenever they want them. Be it a mall, theatre o...
