Encouraging Stem Learning through Design Thinking Activity
Grade 6 students recently had an exciting opportunity to apply design thinking skills in a real-world context by designing their own chocolate wrappers. This activity not only promoted creativity and innovation but also integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning in a fun and engaging way.
Considering the Weight, Name, Nutritional Facts, and Flavor
As part of the design thinking process, students had to consider several factors in creating their chocolate wrappers. First, they needed to think about the weight of the chocolate, which would impact the size and design of the wrapper. Second, students had to come up with a catchy name for their chocolate that would appeal to potential customers. Third, they had to include accurate nutritional facts, which required them to apply mathematical skills in calculating the amount of sugar, fat, and other ingredients in their chocolate. Finally, students had to consider the flavor of their chocolate and how it would be represented in the wrapper’s design.
Enjoying the Activity
Overall, students enjoyed the activity and found it to be a fun and interactive way to learn about STEM concepts. By designing their own chocolate wrappers, students were able to apply math, science, and engineering skills in a practical and relevant context. Additionally, the activity encouraged creativity and innovation, as students had the freedom to design their wrappers in any way they chose.
